Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Franklin & Marshall fell to No. 5 Christopher Newport 1-0 during the second round of play of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships on Sunday afternoon. The Diplomats' season ends after a record-setting year - one that saw the program's first trip to the Centennial Conference Championship, first trip to the NCAA Tournament, and first NCAA Tournament victory.
The Captains (18-0-1) tested the Diplomats (14-4-3) early, ripping a shot at Emily Senko just 27 seconds into the game. Senko was called upon 10 minutes later to keep things level. F&M struggled to find a rhythm - outshot 8-4 in the frame and unable to hit it on frame.
This time is was F&M to send one on net early, as Alex Wilson nearly knocked in a header just three minutes after the halftime break.
Christopher Newport finally broke through in the 56th minute, courtesy of a penalty kick. Senko was decisive in her decision making, but guessed the wrong direction as the Captains took a 1-0 lead.
Senko again came up large just a minute apart, making saves in the 68th and 69th minutes to keep it only a one goal margin. Unfortunately, F&M was held shotless for the final 26 minutes of the contest to seal the 1-0 final.
F&M was outshot 17-7 on the day, including 5-1 on shots on goal. Seven different Diplomats shared one shot attempt apiece.
