Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. -- Sierra Brophy's 23rd minute goal launched Franklin & Marshall into its first ever Centennial Conference (CC) Championship in a stunning 1-0 victory over No. 2 Johns Hopkins on Friday evening. The #5 seeded Diplomats (13-3-2, 5-3-2 CC) handed the #1 seed Blue Jays (14-1-2, 10-0 CC) their first loss and shutout of the season in the victory.
The Diplomats advanced to face No. 7 McDaniel in the CC Championship on Sunday at 3:00pm in Baltimore.
F&M largely dominated the run of play in the first half, running together a ten minute stretch that saw the Diplomats rip six shots and two corners on a stunned Blue Jays defense.
The Diplomats' eighth shot was a clinical finish from Sierra Brophy for the eventual game winner. Meg O'Callahan's feed to Sarah Marsan allowed the defender-turned-midfielder to put one on net. Her attempt was deflected, and was collected by Brophy. A deft touch to her left foot beat a diving keeper for the 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
The teams exchanged only one more shot on net during the rest of the frame for a 1-0 hafltime advantage. F&M outshot Hopkins 9-3 in the half as part of a dominant display from the #5 seed, with Emily Senko saving all three attempts.
The Blue Jays came out renewed in the second half, racking up three shots that were snuffed out by the Diplomats defense in the first 2:17 of the stanza. The best chance for Johns Hopkins came in the 60th minute, as the Blue Jays pinged one off the crossbar.
Despite holding a slim margin, the Diplomats refused to sit back and pack the box, instead continuing to press the Blue Jays. Alison Francis's 80th minute rip nearly put the Diplomats up by two, but was well saved. A four shot flurry by the Blue Jays from distance towards game end gave the F&M defense little worry, as time ran out.
The victory over No. 2 Johns Hopkins is the biggest upset in team history over a ranked opponent, and avenges a 1-0 loss just six days earlier in the CC regular season finale. The win was just the Diplomats' fourth against the Blue Jays, and the first in 24 years. It was the first ever victory on the road against Hopkins.
F&M outshot Johns Hopkins 16-14, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. The Blue Jays held an 8-3 edge in corners.
The Diplomats were paced by Sierra Brophy and Meg O'Callahan's four shots, while Sarah Marsan and Haley Barge had three attempts.
Emily Senko (5-3-1) made four stops for her third shutout of the year, and second of the playoffs.
