Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. -- Franklin & Marshall came up just short in its bid for the Centennial Conference (CC) crown in a 0-0 (5-4 PK) loss to No. 7 McDaniel on Sunday afternoon. The Diplomats (13-3-3, 5-3-2 CC) largely outplayed the No. 2 seeded Green Terror, holding advantages in shots, corners, and time of possession.
F&M nearly struck early, as Meg O'Callahan's probing shot in the 11th minute was knocked aside. The Green Terror had chances of their own just over 15 minutes later, but a well positioned Emily Senko was able to make two saves just a few minutes apart to keep things level at the break.
McDaniel nearly burst through just two minutes into the second half, but saw a chance bounce squared off the crossbar.
The remainder of the second half was fairly quiet until the Diplomats continued their strong run of play late. Haley Barge had arguably the best chance of the evening for either side in the 73rd minute, as a strong build-up found her with the ball at her feet just two yards from net. A backheeled attempt required a full extension save from the Green Terror keeper.
Alison Francis almost ended things in the 88th minute, with a looping ball that nearly snuck past McDaniel's Katherine Carstensen, but was tipped off the post and out to send the game into extra time.
McDaniel came out strong in the first period of free soccer, outshooting the Diplomats 4-2 in the frame. Senko again was called upon in the 94th minute, but turned away the lone attempt on frame in the period.
Sierra Brophy's opportunity in the second overtime stanza was turned away in the 109th minute, as the Diplomats ended strong with a 3-0 shot advantage in the ten minute frame.
The teams entered the shootout, exchanging goals through the first four rounds. F&M missed high on its fifth and final attempt, giving McDaniel the hard fought victory for the team's first CC crown.
F&M outshot McDaniel 16-10 and held a 6-3 edge in corners. Sierra Brophy and Meg O'Callahan led the Diplomats with four shots each. Emily Senko made six saves for F&M.
The Diplomats now await their potential NCAA Tournament fate during the Selection Show on Monday afternoon beginning at 1:00 pm. More information can be found at the link.
