Box Score HUNTINGTON, Pa. -- Franklin & Marshall (3-1) dropped its first match of the season to Arcadia on Friday evening at the Asics Invitational hosted by Juniata.
The Diplomats grabbed the first set by a 25-15 margin, finishing on a 12-2 run. F&M took control during a 7-0 stretch after the sides were knotted at 13-13. After a Nicole Carey kill to make it 14-13, Carlita Bozzo smacked four service aces during the run, which put F&M in a commanding 20-13 lead, followed by a 5-2 run to close the set.
F&M found themselves in a rut to start the second set, falling behind 11-4 early. An 8-2 run highlighted by solid serving from Bozzo tied the sides at 16-16. The Knights closed on a 9-5 run to grab the set 25-21.
The third set was nip and tuck, with the sides exchanging points through 9-9. A 6-0 F&M spurt highlighted by stellar serving from Mikayla Smith gave the Diplomats a 15-9 edge. F&M held a 20-17 advantage late in the set, before Arcadia closed on an 8-2 run to steal it.
F&M took the fourth set 25-21, using a 6-0 run on Meredith Mangum's service to snag a 10-4 lead and exchange points the rest of the way.
Arcadia took control of the fifth and deciding set with a 12-8 edge late, taking advantage of three straight Diplomat errors to pull in front. F&M clawed back to knot things at 13-13, with Allison Franke credited with two kills in the 5-1 run. Two straight kills from the Knights took the set and the match 15-13.
F&M is back in action tomorrow to face Randolph-Macon and nationally-ranked Juniata to finish the Asics Invitational.
