Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. -- After a late game-tying goal by Kat Horsley sent things into overtime, No. 8 Messiah netted the game-winner with 18 seconds to spare to knock off No. 2 Franklin & Marshall by a 2-1 final on Wednesday evening. The Diplomats fell to 1-1 on the year, while the Falcons improved to 3-0.
As expected, it was a tight-knit game throughout most of the contest, with neither side getting good looks. The first half was a defensive battle, with both sides combining for a mere five shots. Messiah had four shots in the first stanza, with Sidney Lippe doing well to turn aside two. Meanwhile, the Diplomats were held to a single shot on frame by Kat Study in the second period.
The Falcons got on the board late in the third period with 1:57 remaining to take a 1-0 advantage. Sophie Carroll and Carolina Riley both had rips on frame that required saves from the Falcon backstop.
The Diplomats continued to press for the tying goal entering the fourth, as Carroll and Riley again were knocking on the doorstep with back-to-back shots in a 22-second span. F&M's defense shut down the Falcons over the frame, holding Messiah to no shots in the quarter.
With 3:26 remaining, Kat Horsley answered for F&M. A scrum in front of the net led to a loose ball that was poked in by the senior midfielder to knot things at 1-1 and forced overtime.
The seven-on-seven extra frame opened up the game for both sides, as F&M and Messiah scrambled for the winning goal. Both Amelia McCarthy and Lauren Mumby put the Falcon keeper to work, but couldn't break through.
With time winding down, Messiah's Jennie Young slid a pass across the frame, and Ashlyn Smith knocked it in for the game winning goal for the Falcons with 18 seconds remaining.
F&M looks to regroup with Mary Washington on tap for Saturday afternoon with a 1:00pm start time on the road.
