No. 6 Women's Lacrosse Takes Down Denison & Lynchburg on Winning Wednesday

HAINES CITY, Fla. - No. 6 Franklin & Marshall women's lacrosse scored the first and last four goals of the contest en route to a 20-10 victory over No. 19 Denison at the Feltrim Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The Diplomats (5-1) then doubled their pleasure with a 1903 victory against Lynchburg for a perfect 2-0 week in the Sunshine State.

During the opening game, F&M ultimately jumped out to a 7-1 lead on the strength of an eight-goal outburst in the second quarter. It then scored four straight to finish off the Big Red (2-3).

An opening possession goal from Marissa McGarrey opened the scoring just 39 seconds into the game, giving F&M a 1-0 lead. Ally Marino, Maddy Birch, and Sydney Lowe tacked on a trio of scores to jump the Diplomats out to a 4-0 advantage.

After a late Denison goal to end the first quarter, F&M rolled off three more tallies in less than four minutes to extend the Diplomat edge to 7-1. Maddy Birch scored the first, assisted on Ally Marino's, then Ally Marino went unassisted with 11:23 remaining in the half.

The teams exchanged scores for the remainder of the half, as Kate McLam netted a down goal with 8:33 left, followed by scores from Lydia Cassilly, Marino, Abby Gravel, and Gillian Brennan. Marino and Gravel's goals came just 22 seconds apart on free position chances, to help F&M to a 12-6 halftime lead.

Denison bookended Marissa McGarrey's second goal of the game to trim the F&M lead back to five with 8:43 left in the third quarter, but a pair of up goals from Lydia Cassilly and Gillian Brennan pushed the edge back to 15-8 with 4:41 remaining. A late tally from the Big Red trimmed the difference to 15-9 after three.

F&M dominated the fourth quarter to pull away for good, as McLam, Bridget Kane, Brennan, Sarah Delaney, and Gravel all tickled twine to give F&M a comfortable 20-10 victory.

Ally Marino dominated with a seven point game, netting four goals with three assists. Gillian Brennan added a hat trick, while Marissa McGarrey, Lydia Cassilly, and Maddy Birch each had multi-goal games. McGarrey also added two helpers for a four point contest.

Emily Kitchin (4-1) picked up the win, stopping ten shots in 56:08. Alyssa Moran finished off the game with a save in her 3:52 of action.

The Diplomats dominated the shot totals (41-26), while holding edges in ground balls (12-9), and clearing 19 of 20 attempts.

The Diplomats doubled up on their victories with a 19-3 win in the evening. Maddy Birch had a career day with five points on two goals and three assists to pace the attack. Lydia Cassilly, Gillian Brennan, and Megan Bizub all registered hat tricks while Ally Marino backed up her solid morning outing with two more goals and assists.

F&M raced out to an early 3-0 advantage and never looked back during the second game on Wednesday. After Lynchburg tallied its first goal of the contest, F&M did not allow another goal for nearly 38 minutes. The string of shutdown defense included shutouts during the second and third period. At the same time, the Diplomats scored 13 straight goals. That included a 7-0 advantage during the second quarter and a 5-0 edge in the third quarter.

Franklin & Marshall finished the contest with a 41-19 advantage in shots, including a 25-8 margin in its favor during the middle two periods. Emily Kitchin made eight saves in just over 35 minutes of game action before the Diplomats were able to get some valuable experience for a number of younger players. That included the goalies where Alyssa Moran (two saves), Molly Donatelli (one save), and Emily Toft (one save) all saw time in the cage. Five different players recorded multiple caused turnovers for the Diplomats' defense in the win.

After five straight contests away from Shadek Stadium, the Diplomats will finally return home for a pair of contests next week. Once the week in Florida wraps up, F&M will have a matchup with No. 13 Catholic set for Wednesday, March 23 before it hosts McDaniel just four days later in the Centennial Conference opener.
