Softball Rakes Early Before Pitching Takes Over in Sweep of Ursinus

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall softball team got back to its winning ways with a sweep of Ursinus on Tuesday afternoon. The Diplomats raced out to early leads in both games and used strong pitching to outscore the Bears by a combined 12-1 score. Tuesday's action was highlighted by a one-hit shutout from first-year Charlotte Dwyer during game two.

Game 1: Franklin & Marshall 6, Ursinus 1

F&M's bats caught fire right away during the first inning as back-to-back singles from Jamie Belfer and Devon Witt set up a Alexa Klepper's two-run single. Brenda Garcia came up with the two-run single during the next inning. Her two-RBI hit scored Hanna Maier and Francesca Testa, who walked and singled to start the inning. Belfer later singled after Garcia was caught being too aggressive on the base paths and scored on an error after putting herself in scoring position following her 17th steal of the season.

Ursinus got one of those runs back in the fifth, but that was all the offense the host Bears could muster during the opening game. Franklin & Marshall tacked on a sacrifice fly from Abi Buell's sacrifice fly in the seventh inning for the eventual 6-1 final.

Peightyn Schwartz threw her seventh complete of the year en route to her sixth victory. She scattered eight hits and struck out three over her seven innings of work while allowing that lone run during the fifth inning.

Belfer was a presence on the bases all afternoon, scoring a pair of runs in addition to a 3-for-4 opening game at the plate. Klepper added two more hits during the win, driving in two and scoring another.

Game two: Franklin & Marshall 6, Ursinus 0

The second game was all Dwyer as the Bears did not record a hit until a pinch-hitter dropped a single into centerfield to start the bottom of the seventh inning. En route to her third complete game of the season, and her fourth victory, Dwyer turned away the Bears at every pitch. She struck out four batters on the afternoon as the Bears put just three runners in scoring position during the second game.

That certainly gave F&M plenty of breathing room on the scoreboard as the Diplomats once again raced out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. In the first, it was once again Kilmer with the RBI as she drove in Belfer after she reached on a leadoff infield single.

F&M's biggest inning came in the second thanks to capitalizing on Ursinus' lone defensive miscue of the game. Kate Clement started that inning with a walk and was moved into scoring position on a double from Testa. The first run came home via an error off the bat of Maier before an RBI groundout from Garcia made it 3-0. Belfer again reached on a single for the second straight inning before she and Garcia scampered home on the two-out RBI hit from Klepper. Klepper would later score a run in the seventh on the RBI single from Buell.

Four Diplomats recorded multiple hits in the victory. That including two each from Belfer, Klepper, Kayla Kilmer, and Testa. Belfer scored two more runs in the nightcap, while Klepper drove in a pair.

Up Next:

The Diplomats will return home this Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Muhlenberg. That Centennial Conference twin bill will also be Senior Day as the Diplomats look to honor their Class of 2022.
