Women's Lacrosse Topped by Gettysburg in National Showdown

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The second-ranked Franklin & Marshall women's lacrosse team saw its 12-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday afternoon at rival Gettysburg. In the first of several potential matchups this year, the No. 7 Bullets came away with a 13-7 victory on their home field. Both teams entered the matchup undefeated in Centennial Conference play.

Right out of the gates, the two nationally-ranked squads displayed their offensive firepower. Both teams converted free-position goals during the opening two minutes, with Marissa McGarrey tallying for the visiting Diplomats. Madison Bray, Sydney Lowe, and Ally Marino each found the back of the cage that same period as the two rivals combined for 10 goals over the first 15 minutes.

The defensive intensity matched that of the attack during the final 45 minutes as the teams combined for just 10 more goals the rest of the afternoon following their torrid start. Marino, who finished with a team-leading four points in the contest, set up Lydia Cassilly for the Diplomats' lone goal of the second quarter as F&M faced an 8-5 deficit at the break.

Cassilly and Marino each scored goals during the third quarter, but the Bullets were finally able to stretch their lead to four goals late in that quarter. A pair of woman-up goals enabled the hosts to take their largest lead of the game before another such tally helped to provide one of Gettysburg's two goals during the fourth.

Gettysburg put 28 shots up compared to just 19 from the Diplomats. Both team's goalies made eight saves throughout the course of the afternoon. Gettysburg also held slight edges in both draw controls (13-11) and ground balls (16-9).

With all of its team goal for the year still in front of them, women's lacrosse will return home this Saturday for a 3 p.m. opening draw versus Washington College. The Shorewomen come into the week receiving votes in the national poll. Prior to the opening draw on Saturday, Franklin & Marshall will recognize an incredibly talented class of eight scholar-athletes during its Senior Day.
