Box Score MONTCLAIR, N.J. - The Franklin & Marshall field hockey team used a strong third quarter attack, scoring two goals while shutting out Montclair State (0-4) on the road in a non-conference matchup Saturday evening.
Coming out of the halftime break locked in a scoreless tie, F&M (3-1) dumped the ball into the offensive zone to setup an attack. A misplay from the Montclair State goalkeeper allowed Keira Boensch to steal the ball. Boensch sent a crossing pass in front of the Red Hawk goalkeeper where Jessica Miller backhanded a shot into the net to put the Diplomats up 1-0. Boensch has now recorded at least one point in three consecutive games.
With 3:35 left in the third quarter, Sophie Carroll stole a pass from the Red Hawk defense that created a breakaway opportunity. Carroll's initial shot was saved by the keeper, but she recovered and controlled the rebound. Carroll turned and fired a shot that found the back of the net to cushion the Diplomat lead.
Early in the game, the Red Hawks had an opportunity to score with two minutes left in the first quarter when MSU forward Carlie Van Tassel got behind the F&M defense. Van Tassel sent a rising shot that was blocked with a nice stick save from Jorja Pastore. The attempt was the only MSU shot on goal that Pastore faced in the match.
The Diplomats peppered the Montclair State net with 11 shots on goal in the game. Boensch and Carroll led the offense with three attempts on net each.
F&M hosts York (Pa.) Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Tylus Field.
