Volleyball Sweeps Past Gettysburg, 3-0

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall volleyball team picked up its second straight sweep of a Centennial Conference opponent with a 3-0 win (25-21, 27-25, 27-25) at Gettysburg on Wednesday night. The Diplomats have had success in the series lately with the Bullets, having won the last five regular season contests. However, tonight's victory marked their first sweep of Gettysburg since the 2011 season.

Three Diplomats once again led the way in kills as Gianna Mangiamele topped all players with 14 on her way to a .321 hitting percentage. Sydney Levins hit .364 on the night with 12 kills, while Coco Shultz added 10 kills. The setting duo was led by Liah Perez's 22 assists, while Hannah McCarthy dished out 15 more helpers. Meredith Mangum came away with 18 digs from the libero position, while Makenna Penuel had a strong night with the team lead in both service aces (3) and blocks (5).

Franklin & Marshall never trailed during the opening set after taking a 2-1 lead very early on. Despite the score being tied five times, the visitors took control of the game as Perez won five straight service points for her side to make the score 15-7 before F&M cruised the opening game win.

The second and third games both went to tiebreaks as the score changed hands nine and four times, respectively. That included 14 ties in the second set and 11 more in the third. Nevertheless, the Diplomats prevailed each time with key plays in the clutch moments. With F&M leading 24-21 in the second, Gettysburg rallied to tie the game at 24 and 25-all before a service ace from Mangum and block from Penuel and Lauren Arnold solidified the 2-0 advantage.

Tied at 24-all in the third set, Gettysburg had a game point but the Diplomats took advantage of a setting mistake on that point before kills from Levins and Mangiamele locked up the sweep.

Volleyball will return to the Mayser Center this Friday for its second of two matches this week. The Diplomats will take on Cabrini in a 7 p.m. start that day in non-conference action. F&M resumes Centennial Conference play when it hosts Haverford at home next Wednesday.
