Volleyball Takes Down Cabrini in Three

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall volleyball team secured its fourth consecutive sweep with a 3-0 win over Cabrini on Friday night (25-21, 25-23, 25-21). The Diplomats (9-6) have now won seven of their last eight matches and are a perfect 4-0 on their home court this season. In addition to 12 consecutive game victories overall, the Diplomats have not dropped a set at home since the opening weekend of the season.

Gianna Mangiamele had a huge game for the hosts as she hit .500 with 13 kills on 26 attempts while not committing an error all night. Sydney Levins also reached double figure kills with 11. Lauren Arnold was another strong presence at the net with eight points as she had five kills and four blocks. As a team, F&M registered 44 kills and seven blocks throughout the victory.

All three sets ended with both teams in the twenties for points. The Diplomats were doubling up the Cavaliers, 12-6, to start the night and were leading 20-15 before Cabrini crawled back within two points. Nevertheless, Mangiamele stemmed that momentum with a kill before an assisted block from Levins and Arnold, plus another solo block from Arnold, capped the opening set.

F&M was trailing 14-8 midway through the second set, but ran off eight of the next 10 points to tie the match at 16-all. The match would be tied three more times before F&M capitalized on three Cabrini attack errors. Fittingly enough, Mangiamele put the finishing touches on the set with yet another kill. The third set was an equally challenging battle as the Diplomats did not hold a lead in the game until a service ace from Meredith Mangum set the score at 22-21 in the home team's favor. However, she would also be the last one to step to the service line as the Diplomats secured the final four points with her at the line.

Setting the offense in motion was a team-high 23 assists from Liah Perez, with Hannah McCarthy adding 13 more. Mangum's huge service ace during the final set was one of four for her on the evening. She also led the team with 22 digs as Coco Shultz contributed 14 more. As a team, eight different Diplomats had at least five digs as the team finished with 72 for the match. That defensive effort helped to limit Cabrini to just a .135 hitting percentage on the night.

Volleyball will have the rest of the weekend away from competition as the team gets set to refocus on Centennial Conference play next week. The Diplomats will be back at home this coming Wednesday when they host Haverford during a 7 p.m. start inside the Mayser Center.
