LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall field hockey team earned a hard-fought win as it upset the 16th-ranked Christopher Newport 2-0 Sunday morning at Tylus Field.

The Diplomats found the back of the net first as Sophie Carroll capitalized on a crossing pass from Keira Boensch with 8:12 left in the first quarter to go up 1-0.

With seconds remaining in the first half, CNU's Alexis Morales carved through the Diplomat defense and got off a clear shot that was kicked away from danger by Jorja Pastore. However, CNU earned another penalty corner. The Diplomat defense applied enough pressure to force CNU to take a backhanded shot that narrowly sailed over the crossbar to end the half.

The Diplomats added an insurance goal with 11:26 in the third quarter. After gaining control at midfield, the F&M offense worked the ball to Keira Boensch who fired a shot that bounced through the CNU defense and into the net to put F&M up 2-0 in the game.

With 6:01 remaining in regulation, Christopher Newport earned a penalty stroke. With the opportunity to potentially cut the deficit in half, the CNU forward didn't make solid contact and the shot was easily saved by Pastore.

Pastore needed to only make three saves to earn her second win of the season and the first shutout of her career.

F&M more than doubled Christopher Newport's number of shots on goal in the game, 7-3. Even though the Captains drew 12 penalty corners in the contest, the Diplomat defense stood strong and earned the shutout.

The Diplomats hopes to continue gaining momentum as they travel to play Messiah Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
