LANCASTER, Pa. - The Franklin & Marshall Volleyball team closed out a sweep of Haverford while honoring its six seniors on Saturday afternoon. In the win,
Hannah McCarthy reached 1,000 career assists, making her just the 11th player in program history to reach that benchmark.
The difference was never more than three in the first game, with five lead changes and nine ties. After F&M began with a 5-2 edge, the Fords rallied to jump in front, 12-9. With Haverford still in front, 19-16, the Diplomats used three straight points to even the score at 19-19. The Fords then re-took the lead by winning four of the next six points before F&M once again tied the game at 23-23. Facing set point just one rally later, a
Lauren Arnold kill forced a tiebreak which the Diplomats won, 27-25.
F&M jumped out to a 7-3 advantage in the second frame, but Haverford managed to tie the game at 10-10, and later took a 15-12 lead following five consecutive points. Immediately after, the Diplomats responded with a 5-0 run of their own to get back out in front. With the Fords leading 22-21, F&M won three straight rallies before winning the set, 25-23.
The Diplomats ended the match with ease in the third stanza, getting out to a 7-1 lead before building the advantage up to 20-5 thanks to a 10-0 run.
Makenna Penuel clinched the match with a kill, making it the 10th sweep of the season.
Liah Perez provided a team-high 20 assists with
Gianna Mangiamele recording 11 kills. On the defensive end,
Coco Shultz registered 16 digs.
F&M now travels to Swarthmore to take on the Garnet on Wednesday, October 25 at 7 p.m.
