LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's soccer team (10-2-3, 6-2-1 CC), a team receiving votes in the national poll, found the back of the net twice in its 2-0 win over Gettysburg (7-6-2, 5-3-1 CC) Wednesday afternoon to clinch its third-consecutive Centennial Conference (CC) Playoff berth.
F&M attacked early and often to break into the scoring column just seven minutes into the match.
Alex Wilson played to ball out to
Mikaela Timmermans, who weaved by her defender and sent the games' third shot over the outstretched arms of the Gettysburg goalkeeper for her fifth goal of the season. Wilson was credited with her second assist of the year on the play.
The Diplomats struck again in the first half when
Riley Durborow connected with
Alison Francis in front of the net to put F&M ahead 2-0. The score was Francis' fifth goal of the fall and Durborow's first assist of the year.
Franklin & Marshall's stingy defense only allowed two shots in the first 45 minutes with Gettysburg's closest chance coming in the final minute of the first half. Bullets' midfielder Payton Waller sent a shot from distance that rang off the crossbar and bounced away from danger.
The Diplomats continued their relentless attack on offense in the second half, firing 12 shots in the final 45 minutes of play. F&M had an opportunity to add a third goal in the 88th minute as Francis,
Sophie Koziol, and
Kat Tandler all let out shots within seconds of each other. However, Bullets' goalkeeper Alex Jurow made three great saves to keep the deficit at two.
F&M outshot Gettysburg, 22-4, in the match with Francis posting a game-high six attempts.
Lucille Fleming only had to make one save as she picked up her seventh shutout of the season, which is second-most in the Centennial Conference.
Franklin & Marshall now hits the road to conclude the regular season. The Diplomats will face Washington College on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
