GETTYSBURG, Pa. - In a tightly contested, five set match, the Franklin & Marshall Volleyball team saw its Centennial Conference tournament run end at the hands of Gettysburg on Friday night.
After beginning the first set with a 7-4 edge, the Diplomats fell behind 10-6 following six straight points by the Bullets. F&M then re-took the lead with a 4-0 run, but were met by a 10-2 Gettysburg run, which included six unanswered points. Thought the Diplomats won the next four rallies, the Bullets ended the frame by claiming five of the final six points for a 25-18 set win.
F&M started the second stanza with an 8-6 advantage before winning four consecutive points to go up by six. Gettysburg then chipped away at the deficit, getting to withing three at 19-16, but F&M used a 5-0 run to bring up set point. Two rallies later,
Rei Baker finished the frame with a kill to even the set score.
Down 6-3 in the opening moments of the third game, the Diplomats evened the score after winning three straight points. The Bullets then re-took with a 4-1 run before the two teams traded points over the next four rallies. Down 12-9, an 8-0 F&M run put the Diplomats ahead for good for the remainder of the stanza. Despite Gettysburg closing the gap to two at 19-17, F&M went on to win the set, 25-20.
The Diplomats failed to lead at any point in the fourth frame, falling behind 11-6 to start. Though F&M briefly leveled the score at 11-11 with five consecutive points, the Bullets won five of the next seven points to remain on top. With Gettysburg leading 17-15, the Bullets added on to the advantage with a 5-1 run to go up by six. Closing out the game with a 25-20 win, Gettyburg forced a decisive fifth set.
Tied 2-2 in the final game,the Diplomats took a 5-2 edge after winning three straight rallies. After the two teams then went back-and-forth to bring the score to 9-6, the Bullets scored five unanswered points to get ahead, 11-9. After F&M won the next rally, Gettysburg clinched the match by claiming the final four points.
Four different players registered double-digit kills for the Diplomats on the night, led by
Gianna Mangiamele with 17.
Liah Perez posted 26 assists, while
Coco Shultz tallied 17 digs.
The Diplomats will now await a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, with the selection on Monday, November 13 at 1 p.m.
