LANCASTER, Pa. – The No. 8 Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team's (14-3-3) incredible season came to a close as it fell, 1-1 (7-6 in penalty kicks), to No. 7 Connecticut College (12-1-6) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday evening at Tylus Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Camels broke into the scoring column first with a goal off a rebound in the 79th minute.
Nolan Booth made two excellent saves, but Connecticut College snuck a third shot past the outstretched goalkeeper to break up the scoreless tie.
Just three minutes later,
Philip Monos connected with
Koa Kaliebe to head in the game-tying goal. The score was Kaliebe's ninth of the season, while Monos was credited with his third assist of the fall.
Scoreless after 90 minutes, F&M held a 17-16 advantage in shots heading into the first overtime period. However, the Camels outshot the Diplomats, 6-4, during the scoreless 20 minutes of overtime.
For the second-consecutive season, the Diplomats went to a shootout in their second-round contest. Both teams connected with their first six penalty kicks without either goalkeeper making a save. On F&M's seventh penalty kick, the visitor's goalkeeper made a huge save to deny F&M of holding a lead in PK's. Connecticut College's Jake Creus found the back of the net to win the game for the Camels and send his team into the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.
Franklin & Marshall's season comes to an end after a remarkable year that saw the Diplomats climb to as high as No. 4 in the national polls, while also qualifying for its 10th-consecutive NCAA Tournament.
