LANCASTER, Pa. - In the second of back-to-back games, the Franklin & Marshall Women's Basketball team closed out the Terry Greene Tip-Off Tournament with a 61-57 win over Penn State Harrisburg on Sunday night.
After the two teams failed to score in the opening three minutes of the game, the Lions broke the ice with a Bailey Oehmig three-pointer. Penn State then pushed the lead to 7-0 while keeping the Diplomats scoreless for the next four minutes, until a
Quinn Galligan shot from beyond the arc got F&M on the board. Heading into the second quarter, the Lions led 9-6, making just one field-goal in the final four minutes of the frame.
The Diplomats began to chip away at the deficit in the following period, closing the gap to two at 14-12. Trailing 16-14,
Gia Sioutis tied the game for F&M with a pair of free throws before an
Ally Trebelev lay-up on the next possession gave the Diplomats their first lead of the game. Just over a minute later, Trebelev hit one of two free throws and was followed by a Galligan three-pointer to cap off a 10-0 run.
Lizzie Neville finished the half with five straight points as the Diplomats took a 27-20 advantage into the locker room.Â
Within the first three minutes of the third quarter, F&M grew its lead to double-digits, highlighted by three-pointers made by Neville and Trebelev. With the Diplomats then going scoreless for the next four minutes, Penn State scored six unanswered to bring the score to 35-31. Overall, F&M scored just five points over the final seven minutes of the stanza, leading 40-37 heading into the final quarter.
On the first possession of the fourth quarter, Jenna Montana evened the score with a three-pointer, tying the game for the time since it was 16-16. Ali Lister then followed it up with a lay-up to give Penn State its first lead since it lead 16-14. Later leading 44-43, the Lions gained breathing room with another Montana bucket from long range, but were answered by a Galligan three-pointer on the other end. Over the next three minutes, F&M failed to register a field goal before a Neville basket gave the Diplomats a 50-49 edge. Tied 50-50,
Jaclyn Feit scored nine of the final 11 points for F&M to lift the Diplomats to a 61-57 win.Â
Shooting a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, Galligan led F&M with 19 points on the night. For the second time in a row, Feit led the team in rebounds and blocks with eight of each. As a group, the Diplomats forced 23 Lions turnovers and scored 17 points off of giveaways.Â
F&M will next play on Tuesday, November 21 at 6 p.m. as it hosts Ursinus at the Mayser Center for its first Centennial Conference matchup.Â
