CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Franklin & Marshall volleyball team remained undefeated in Centennial Conference play as the Diplomats (13-3, 2-0 CC) swept Washington College (10-5, 0-1 CC) by scores of 25-22, 25-20, and 25-22 on Saturday. The victory was F&M's 10th by sweep this season.
The first set featured 10 ties and four lead changes before the Diplomats prevailed during the closing points. The last of those tied scores was at 22-all before Mya Anderson and Gianna Mangiamele combined for a pair of blocks on two of the final three points, with Avery Grantham serving up an ace to get the game to set point. The Diplomats and Shorewomen were tied at five-all during the second set before F&M took control by scoring seven consecutive points off a strong service from Melissa Benkowitz. WAC had trimmed the early deficit down to 20-19 before the visitors went up 2-0 by scoring five of the final six points.
Franklin & Marshall was on the brink of victory after the serve of Maile Lani Sugamura took a 21-19 set and got her side to match point. The Shorewomen battled to the end as they fought off three match points before an F&M time out led to Grantham's kill which halted any further thoughts of WAC comeback.
Grantham's final kill gave her 10 on the day as she hit .643 during her 14 attempts. Coco Shultz finished with a team-high 11 kills as she swung at a .333 clip, while Anderson hit .308 for the match with six kills in 13 swings. Anderson added a team-best six blocks (one solo) to her day at the net. Carly Campbell once again handled the setting duties as she recorded a double-double with 32 assists to go along with a team-best 12 digs.
After an extended stretch of road matches, Franklin & Marshall returns home to the Mayser Center this coming Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match with Dickinson. That will be the first of two home Centennial Conference contests for the Diplomats who also host Bryn Mawr next Saturday at 1 p.m.
