MIDDLETOWN, Pa.- The Franklin & Marshall men's basketball team (1-1) wrapped up the Penn State Tip-Off Classic with an 88-85 overtime victory over Albertus Magnus (0-2) on Sunday afternoon.Â
Kevin Nowoswiat set a career-high for points for the second-consecutive game, totaling 29 points. He shot 10-for-16 from the field and 3-for-5 beyond the arc. Josh Parra had a career-high with 16 rebounds alongside 20 points, shooting 50.0% on field goals. John Seidman led the team with seven rebounds alongside eight points and four assists. Vakaris Grauslys collected nine points, four assists, and two steals, while Steve Donahue led bench points with eight.Â
The overtime period started with Franklin Jones scoring a layup on a pass into the paint from a pass from Grauslys followed by a Albertus Magnus layup. Parra beat his man at the post on F&M's next possession for an 84-82 lead. Neither team scored over both of their next two possessions.Â
Nowoswiat doubled the advantage with 1:40 on the clock on a jumper from the charity stripe, for an 86-84 lead. The Falcons drew on the next possession and converted by free throws. They then forced a steal and earned another trip to the free-throw line, converting one of two to get back within a point. F&M missed a layup on their next possession but pressured an errant pass from Albertus Magnus, giving F&M possession with 35 seconds to go.
The Falcons found themselves forced to foul Nowoswiat who sank both of his free throws. With seconds dwindling, Albertus Magnus took a shot from beyond the arc, missing the shot but recovering the ball giving a chance to use a timeout. They inbounded the ball with five seconds to go but could not sink their buzzing-beating three to tie the game.
The game was tightly contested throughout to set up the overtime duel, with F&M holding the largest lead of the game nine minutes into the first half at 25-13 after breaking out to a 7-0 lead in the opening 90 seconds. The Falcons consistently narrowed that 12 point gap, tying the game at 30-30 with four minutes left in the first half. Seven straight points from the Diplomats was countered by six from Albertus Magnus for a 37-36 halftime scoreline. F&M shot 56.0% from the field and 57.1% on three-pointers in the first 20 minutes.
F&M started the second half with a Nowoswiat three and Parra layup, going ahead by six points. Albertus Magnus took their first lead of the game a few minutes later at 46-45. F&M pushed back ahead by 11 points 9:30 to play. A gap around this margin held until the final five minutes, as the Falcons scored ten straight points to claim a 78-77 lead. A Parra layup and Grauslys free throw gave F&M a two-point lead with 23 seconds to play, but a Falcons layup eventually sent the game to overtime.
The Diplomats return to the capitol area as they face Elizabethtown (0-1) on Wednesday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m. for their third game of the season.Â
