LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team (5-1) defeated Alvernia (3-3), 65-47, Saturday evening to be crowned champions of the Terry Greene Tip-Off Tournament. The Diplomats were dominant in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Wolves, 24-11, in the frame to pull away from the visitors in the contest.
Trailing 9-5 with two minutes remaining in the first quarter, F&M scored nine-unanswered points to close the frame. After
Mackenzie Ward knocked down a pair of free throws, the sophomore drained a three-pointer on the next possession to give the Diplomats a 10-9 lead at the 1:38 mark.
Kennedy Wilburn followed by chipping in four points to give F&M a five-point advantage going into the second quarter.
Lauren Rusas started the second quarter by splashing a three-pointer to extend the Diplomats lead to 17-9. However, Alvernia scored nine-straight points to take a 18-17 lead with 4:35 remaining in the half. The teams traded baskets to bring the score to 22-all with 2:04 on the clock.
Gia Sioutis knocked down two free throws and
Lizzie Neville made a jumper to give the Diplomats a 26-22 lead entering halftime.
F&M started the quarter on an 11-3 run to extend the Diplomats' lead to 37-25 with 5:54 left in the stanza. Leading 38-29, Wilburn made a layup, followed by a three-pointer from
Ally Trebelev to give F&M a 43-29 advantage. After the Golden Wolves knocked down a pair of free throws, F&M came right back with jumpers from
Kayla McCrea and Trebelev to continue increasing the lead. Alvernia made a layup in the final minute, but Trebelev drained a three-pointer with seconds on the clock to increase the Diplomats' lead to 50-33 entering the final quarter.
As a team, F&M shot 50 percent from both the field (9-of-18) and beyond the arc (2-of-4), while also holding Alvernia to just 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from the field in the quarter.
Franklin & Marshall continued to pull away in the fourth with the Diplomats starting the frame on an 8-2 run to match its biggest lead of the night at 22 points.
Trebelev finished her night with 15 points and seven rebounds to be named to the All-Tournament Team. Neville led the Diplomats in scoring with 16 points and two three-pointers. Neville also had four steals in the contest. Wilburn tallied her 11th-career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds in the win.
As a team, the Diplomats ended the game shooting 32.4 percent (22-of-68) from the field.
Franklin & Marshall returns to the Mayser Center on Tuesday when it hosts Centenary at 6:00 p.m.
