FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (4-10) wrapped up the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with 19 hits in a 13-3 win against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford (5-9) Saturday morning.
Pitt. Bradford broke into the scoring column first in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI-single to go up 1-0. F&M responded in the top of the third as
Spencer Berson singled into center field and
Bobby Falese doubled down the left field line to place runners at the corners with no outs. A single into right field from
Jakob Hoffman scored Berson from third to tie the game at 1-1. The next batter,
Drew Butera handed the Diplomats the lead on a sacrifice fly into center field to plate Falese. A groundout allowed Hoffman to advance to third, setting up the senior to score on a fielding error in the infield during the next at-bat – extending the F&M lead to 3-1.
The Panthers plated a runner in the bottom of the fourth to make it a one-run game, but the Diplomats' bats came to life in the top of the sixth as
Evan Varga,
Ryan Rodriguez,
Michael von Zuben all singled to load the bases. After a fielder's choice scored Varga, Hoffman launched his first home run of the season over the left field wall to extend the Diplomats' lead to 8-2.
F&M continued adding runs in the top of the eighth as
Drew Butera scored two on a double to left center and Rodriguez brought in a pair on an RBI-single to score the team's 12th run. The Diplomats stretched their lead to 10 in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Falese to bring the score to 13-3.
Hoffman delivered a big game at the plate, recording three hits and five RBI. Falese and Varga also tallied three hits, while Butera drove in three RBI in the win.
Peter Mullen (1-2) earned the win as he struck out a career-high nine batters, while allowing just two earned runs in five innings of work.
Franklin & Marshall returns to Pennsylvania for a road game against Cairn on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
