COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - In a pair of low scoring games, the Franklin & Marshall Softball team dropped both contests of its doubleheader against Ursinus.
Game 1: Franklin & Marshall 0, Ursinus 1
Putting just five runners in scoring position in the tilt, the Diplomats were walked off by the Bears in extra innings, 1-0. F&M's best opportunity to score came in the top of the third, when it put runners on second and thirds with two outs. However, a fielder's choice in the ensuing at-bat ended the frame.Â
In both the bottom of the sixth and seventh, the Diplomats faced runners on second and third, but each time,
Kayla Kilmer got out of the inning unscathed, sending the game to extra innings. F&M once again put a pair of runners in scoring position in the top of the eighth, but were unable to convert, as
Alexa Klepper flew out to bring the inning to a close. In the bottom of the frame, a base hit with a runner on third won the game for the Bears.
Despite the loss, Kilmer (2-3) recorded two strikeouts and did not allow an earned run in 2.1 innings.
Game 2: Franklin & Marshall 0, Ursinus 3
F&M was blanked in the backend of the doubleheader as well, with Ursinus getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third and never looking back. In their first time up to bat, the Diplomats put runners on first and second with one out but left them stranded to remain scoreless.Â
Two frames later, the Bears had runners on second and third with no outs before a ground out and a wild pitch brought home two runs to give Ursinus the early lead. In the bottom of the fifth, a RBI triple extended the Bears' advantage to 3-0. Though F&M did bring the game-tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh,
Natalia Garza grounded out to end the game.Â
Ainsley McClure (5-7) took the loss after allowing three earned runs and striking out two batters in 5.1 innings.Â
The Diplomats will return home on Saturday, April 20 to host Haverford for a doubleheader, set to begin at 1 p.m.
