Baseball Turns Away Gettysburg, 5-4

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (11-14, 1-1 CC) completed its series sweep of Gettysburg (13-14, 2-4 CC) with a 5-4 victory in Sunday afternoon's Centennial Conference (CC) contest. The Diplomats led by four runs when the Bullets scored two runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh to cut the deficit to one. However, F&M remained composed to hold off Gettysburg - claiming its third conference win of the season.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fourth, Spencer Berson walked and Michael von Zuben singled to put runners at the corners with no outs. During the next at-bat, von Zuben stole second and drew a throw from the Gettysburg catcher – allowing Berson to score and tie the game at 1-1. After von Zuben worked his way over to third on a balk, Bobby Falese gave the Diplomats the lead with an RBI-sacrifice fly to left field.

F&M continued applying pressure on offense in the top of the fifth as Andrew Filippelli roped a one-out double into right field. After Nolan McCloskey and AJ Desautels both walked to load the bases, a groundout scored Filippelli to give the Diplomats a two-run cushion. F&M would then push across its fourth run of the contest on a throwing error on the Bullets' pitcher to extend the Diplomats' lead to 4-1. Franklin & Marshall would later score its fifth run of the contest in the top of the sixth as Butera tripled to right center field and scored two batters later on a wild pitch.
Butera and Filippelli led the Diplomats with two hits each, while Berson and Falese each recorded an RBI in the win.

Will O'Connor (1-1) earned his first-collegiate win on the mound, striking out one and allowing one earned run in five innings of work. Dax Bush recorded his second save of the season as he struck out four batters and didn't allow a hit in two innings of relief.

Franklin & Marshall returns to Caplan Field on Tuesday to begin a home-and-home series with Ursinus. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
