Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Upended by Dickinson

LANCASTER, Pa. - Hosting Dickinson for a doubleheader at Baker Campus Fields, the Franklin & Marshall Softball team was swept, 1-0 and 5-4.

Game 1: Franklin & Marshall 0, Dickinson 1

With the two teams combining for just five hits, the Red Devils shutout the Diplomats 1-0. In the top of the second, Dickinson loaded the bases with two out before a walk brought in the lone run of the game.

Over the next four innings, the Red Devils put two more runners in scoring position, but were stranded on each occasion, as the score remained 1-0 heading into the final frame. Dickinson had its best opportunity for insurance runs in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with one out. However, a ground ball to Jaden Spigner led to an inning-ending double play.

In its final time up to bat, F&M got the bottom of the seventh started with runners on first and second with nobody out. A ground out then advanced the two runners, putting both the game-tying and go-ahead run in scoring position. They would remain on base, however, as the next two batters struck out to end the game.

Despite the loss, Charlotte Dwyer (0-3) had her best outing of the season with five strikeouts and one earned run allowed through 6.2 innings.

Game 2: Franklin & Marshall 4, Dickinson 5

After the Diplomats struck first in the bottom of the first, the Red Devils responded with five runs over the next four innings to come away with a 5-4 win. F&M loaded the bases with nobody out in its first time up to bat, which was followed by a Sophia Noriega RBI single to put the Diplomats up 1-0. In the next at-bat, though, Madison Martin grounded into a double play, of which one out was at home. Kate Clement then flew out to center field, stranding runners on second and third.

Dickinson answered in the top of the second, first putting runners on first and second before a throwing error allowed the run to score from second. A sacrifice fly in the next at-bat knocked in another run, which gave the Red Devils the lead for good. F&M did briefly tie the game in the bottom of the frame, as a ground ball by Natalia Garza brought in Maddy Yeingst, but Dickinson scored one run in each of the next three innings to extend its advantage to 5-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Alexa Klepper led off the stanza with a triple and was followed by a Noriega RBI double, cutting the deficit to two with nobody out. Two at-bats later, Noriega came in to score on a Clement ground out, making it a one-run game. After Yeingst walked to represent the game-tying run, Spigner grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning. It was the last time F&M got a runner on base for the remainder of the game, as it went down 1-2-3 in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Tossing a complete game, Aliza Sheflin (3-4) took the loss after allowing three earned runs and striking out five batters.

The Diplomats will continue conference play on the road, as they head to Ursinus for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 11.
