Field Hockey Comes Up Short in OT Loss at No. 15 SUNY Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The No. 18 Franklin & Marshall field hockey team (0-2) was defeated in overtime, 4-3, in a non-conference thriller at No. 15 SUNY Cortland (2-0) on Sunday afternoon. Despite scoring three fourth-quarter goals to take a 3-2 advantage, F&M couldn't put away Cortland as the Red Dragons netted the equalizer with 1:17 on the clock – forcing the contest to overtime.

Cortland found the back of the net in each of the first two quarters to take a 2-0 advantage into halftime. The Diplomats matched the Red Dragons in the shot column at 4-4 through the first 15 minutes of play. In the second frame, Cortland ripped off six shots and held F&M without a shot to take a 10-4 shot advantage into half.

After both teams were held scoreless in the third, the Diplomats got on the board 42 seconds into the final quarter as Megan Dadio scored her first-career goal to cut the deficit in half. Six minutes later, Jessica Miller found Caitlin Hoover in front of the net to tie the game up at 2-2. Miller continued being a force in the offensive area as she ripped a shot that was saved by the Cortland goalkeeper. The senior cleaned up the rebound and buried her second shot in the net to give the Diplomats a 3-2 lead with 6:51 remaining in regulation.

Both teams maintained an offensive possession in overtime, but Cortland worked a penalty corner to set-up the game-winning score one minute and 49 seconds into the extra period.

Dadio led F&M in shots with five total and four on goal, while Miller tallied four total shots and three on target.

In net, goalkeeper Meghan Dole made eight saves in the loss.

Franklin & Marshall now turns its attention to hosting its home opener against No. 7 Christopher Newport on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
