Women's Soccer Rallies to Force 2-2 Draw at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's soccer team scored two goals during the final six minutes of regulation time to earn a tie against Swarthmore and remain undefeated in Centennial Conference play. Swarthmore came into the contest receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll.

The Diplomats (2-2-5, 1-0-2 CC) were trailing 2-0 with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation after the Garnet (4-0-4, 2-0-1 CC) scored twice during the second half. Swarthmore's goals came during the 49th and 80th minutes of play as it finished the match with a 20-12 advantage in shots which was largely skewed by a 12-1 edge during the first 45 minutes.

Nevertheless, Franklin & Marshall was starting to gain some traction offensively as it recorded 11 of its 12 shots during the final 25 minutes of regulation time. The first goal of the Diplomats' night came as a result of that consistent pressure when Zoe Warne saw her initial shot saved during the 85th minute of regulation, but Ellison Errington was in perfect position to finish the rebound and cut the lead to 2-1.

Just over four minutes later, the Diplomats earned their fourth corner kick of the night. When the ball was played into the box, Swarthmore's defense attempted to head the ball out of danger but the ball ended up as an own goal with just 1:43 showing on the game clock. The Centennial Conference showdown ended in a draw just moments later as the last offensive chance for either side ended with the Diplomats called for being in an offsides position as they were pushing for the game-winning goal.

Errington's goal was the first of her collegiate career as she finished the match with a team-high three shot attempts. That goal made her the ninth different F&M player with a goal this season. Kate Boujoukos also tied for the team lead with three shots, while Sophie Koziol and Warne added multiple shot attempts under the lights. Lucy Fleming had a strong night in goal for Franklin & Marshall as she stopped a career-best 11 shots to put her offense in a position where they were able to rally late and secure a key point in the conference standings.

Women's soccer now faces a shorter than usual turnaround as the Diplomats return to action this coming Monday at 7 p.m. at home against Penn State Berks. Centennial Conference play resumes next Saturday when F&M welcomes McDaniel to Tylus Field for a 6 p.m. match as part of the College's True Blue Weekend.
