LEXINGTON, Va. – The Franklin & Marshall women's soccer team (0-2-1) was denied on the road at Washington & Lee (2-1), 1-0, in Saturday afternoon's non-conference game. After a scoreless first half, the Generals claimed the lone goal of the game in the 55th minute to push past the Diplomats in the contest.
F&M had an early opportunity to attack in the 13th minute of the game as
Lillian Williams sent a shot towards the Generals' net. However, her attempt went wide of the left post for a goal kick. Franklin & Marshall didn't have many offensive chances early in the match as Williams' shot was the Diplomats' lone attempt of the first half.
Out of the halftime break, F&M generated some early scoring opportunities that started with
Grace Craig firing a shot on goal that was saved by W&L goalkeeper Abby Groff in the 46th minute. Five minutes later, Williams sent a shot towards the bottom-left corner of the cage, but once again Groff came up with the save.
Still scoreless in the 55th minute, the Generals flipped the field and found the back of the net to claim a 1-0 lead.
Franklin & Marshall tried to respond in the 69th minute as
Julianna Sirico sent an attempt in hopes of a game-tying goal, but Groff made the save to keep the Diplomats off the scoreboard.
As a team, Washington & Lee outshot F&M, 9-8, in the contest. Individually, Williams led the game in total shot attempts with three. In net,
Lucy Fleming made a season-high four saves in the loss.
Franklin & Marshall now turns its attention to Wednesday night's non-conference game, hosting York (Pa.) at 7:00 p.m.
