BALTIMORE, Md. – The Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team (11-6, 2-4 CC) suffered a 79-42 loss on the road at No. 25 Johns Hopkins (12-3, 4-1 CC) in Saturday afternoon's Centennial Conference (CC) contest at Goldfarb Gym. A cold start from the field put the Diplomats in a hole early as JHU led by double-digits most of the first half. The visitors cut the Blue Jays' lead to single digits late in the second quarter, but F&M couldn't overtake Johns Hopkins in the game.
A three pointer from
Ally Trebelev and a layup from
Lizzie Neville put the Diplomats ahead 5-3 three minutes into Saturday's matchup. From that point, F&M fell into a shooting slump, which allowed the Blue Jays to score 15-unanswered points to take an 18-5 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Johns Hopkins led 26-8 with 6:07 remaining in the half when F&M began chipping away at the Blue Jays' lead.
Kennedy Wilburn started the run by converting a three-point play, followed by the senior knocking down a jumper on the next possession to reduce the deficit to 13. After Neville drained a pair of free throws to make the score 26-15,
Kayla McCrea turned a steal into two points on the other end of the floor to cut the deficit to single-digits.
Lauren Rusas made a layup to cap the run as JHU added two on the following possession to make the score 26-19. McCrea made a layup at the 2:44 mark to keep the deficit at seven, but that would be the closest the Diplomats would get for the remainder of the game as Johns Hopkins began to pull away – taking a 36-26 advantage into the halftime break.
F&M hung around to start the third quarter as Trebelev and Wilburn knocked down jumpers on back-to-back possessions to reduce the JHU lead to 38-30. The Blue Jays began to pull away as the home team extend the lead to 13. F&M responded with a layup from Wilburn, followed by a jumper from Trebelev to get the Diplomats within nine at the 6:10 mark. From that point, Johns Hopkins grew its lead to 56-38 at the end of the third quarter and continued its success in the fourth quarter – leading by as much as 39 points in the contest.
Johns Hopkins shot 44.8 percent (30-of-67) from the field, while limiting F&M to 28.3 percent (15-of-53) from the field in the game. The Blue Jays also outrebounded the Diplomats, 47-26, in Saturday afternoon's matchup.
Neville and Trebelev finished the game with 10 points each. Neville scored six of her points at the free throw line, while Trebelev knocked down two three-pointers in the contest. Wilburn closely followed with nine points, nine rebounds and three steals.
Franklin & Marshall now turns its attention to next week, where it hits the road to face Ursinus on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
