LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team (13-6, 4-4 CC) held off Dickinson (10-8, 4-3 CC), 57-50, in Saturday afternoon's Centennial Conference (CC) game at the Mayser Center. The Diplomats shot 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from the field in the second half en route to outscoring the Red Devils, 34-23, in the final 20 minutes of play. Saturday's victory is F&M's first win over Dickinson since 2019.
Trailing 8-4 with four minutes remaining in the first quarter,
Ally Trebelev splashed a three-pointer, followed by a layup from
Kennedy Wilburn on the next possession to give the Diplomats a 9-8 lead. Dickinson answered by scoring the next five points, but a free throw from
Steph Sexton in the closing seconds reduced the Red Devils' lead to 13-10 after one quarter of play.
Dickinson slowly grew its lead to 25-16 through the first eight minutes of the second quarter. The Red Devils' run concluded at the two-minute mark as
Lizzie Neville knocked down a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to seven. The junior continued her effort on offense as she converted a layup on the next possession. Dickinson sank a jumper in the final minute, but
Mackenzie Ward quickly answered with a three-pointer on the next possession to reduce the visitors' lead to 27-23 at the end of the first half.
The Red Devils held a 31-28 advantage at the 6:28 mark of the third quarter when Neville connected on two free throws, followed by Wilburn making a layup to give the Diplomats a one-point lead. After Dickinson splashed a three-pointer,
Molly Flanagan scored the next four points to give F&M a 36-34 advantage. Both teams traded baskets in the closing seconds of the quarter, but a layup from Trebelev gave F&M a 40-36 edge entering the closing frame.
The Diplomats started the fourth quarter with jumpers from
Quinn Galligan and Neville to raise their lead to eight. Following a Dickinson three-pointer, Trebelev knocked down a pair of free throws and Galligan drilled a triple to push the F&M lead to 49-39. Franklin & Marshall continued rolling as Ward made a jumper and Trebelev drained two free throws to gave the home team its largest lead of the day at 14. Dickinson didn't go away quietly as it began an 11-1 run to cut the F&M lead to 54-50 with 1:14 remaining in regulation. Despite the Red Devils' late run, Franklin & Marshall knocked down three free throws in the final minute to hold onto the victory.
Franklin & Marshall shot 29.6 percent (16-of-54) from the field, while Dickinson shot 27.6 percent (16-of-58) from the field in the contest.
Neville led the game with 14 points, while finishing a perfect 8-of-8 at the charity stripe. Wilburn registered 12 points and 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Neville and Wilburn also swiped three steals each in the win. Trebelev ended her night with 11 points, while Flanagan grabbed a career-high nine rebounds in the victory.
Franklin & Marshall looks to continue its winning streak when it returns to the Mayser Center on Wednesday to host Washington College at 7:00 p.m.
