LANCASTER, Pa.- A third-quarter Johns Hopkins goal broke a 1-1 deadlock, handing the No. 17 Franklin & Marshall field hockey team (9-3, 2-2 Centennial Conference) a 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays (11-1, 5-0 Centennial Conference) on Saturday afternoon.
Caitlin Hoover had the lone goal of the game for the Diplomats, while
Meghan Dole made five stops on seven chances in the cage.
The Blue Jays struck first after drawing their second penalty corner inside of the opening three minutes, playing a ball into the far post from the circle for a tip-in goal. Â
F&M drew level two minutes later, as Hoover was the first person to the ball following a clash at the post between
Hannah Fitzgerald and the Hopkins goalkeeper. The chance was created from a ball over-the-top of the defense from
Megan Dadio. Hoover took advantage of the out-of-position keeper from a narrow angle, hitting a ball over the keeper and off the post to tie the game.
The score stayed at 1-1 through the end of the first half, as Hopkins narrowly lead in shots, 7-6, and controlled penalty corners created, 6-1.Â
The Blue Jays scored the eventual game-winning goal four minutes into the second half from a penalty corner, as the Blue Jays created a strong opportunity via a couple of quick passes into the circle to a player at the near post who slotted it past a Dole and a defender stationed at the near post.Â
F&M was unable to tie the game back up in the second half despite seven shots and six penalty corners in the final 30 minutes.Â
The Diplomats compete in the midweek when they travel to Muhlenberg on Wednesday, October 15, at 7:00 p.m.
