GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's soccer team (7-2-4, 3-1-2 CC) only needed one goal to take a 1-0 victory over Gettysburg (6-5-2, 3-3 CC) in Wednesday evening's Centennial Conference (CC) action.
The Diplomats opened the scoring in the 35th minute as
Grace Craig sent a free kick into the center of the Gettysburg box.
Kate Boujoukos headed a shot past the goalkeeper to put F&M ahead, 1-0. The score was Boujoukos' second of the season and the eighth game-winner of her career. Meanwhile, Craig was credited with her first-career assist on the play.
F&M came right back down the field and setup another free kick opportunity in the 37th minute with a chance to add to its lead, but
Ashley Inacio fired a shot attempt off the crossbar.
Amanda Nemeth collected the rebound and rocketed a following shot, but her attempt went over the cage for a goal kick.
Franklin & Marshall outshot Gettysburg, 6-4, in the first 45 minutes of play with both teams putting half of their shots on target.
The Diplomats came out firing to start the second half with
Julianna Sirico and
Zoe Warne putting shots on goal in the first three minutes of the period, but the Gettysburg goalkeeper was in perfect position to make saves on both attempts.
The Bullets put together one final push late in the game as Gettysburg's Stephanie Balerna put a shot on target in the 88th minute. However,
Lucy Fleming made her third save of the game to complete her fourth shutout of the season.
F&M outshot Gettysburg, 12-8, in the contest with the Diplomats generating eight shots on goal. Nemeth led the Diplomats with three shots, while
Meg Balerna and Boujoukos tallied two apiece in the win.
Franklin & Marshall returns home to Tylus Field on Saturday to host No. 24 Johns Hopkins at 6:00 p.m.
