COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's soccer team (9-4-4, 4-3-2 CC) fell on the road to Ursinus (9-5-3, 3-4-2 CC), 1-0, in Wednesday evening's Centennial Conference (CC) game. A goal in the 57th minute off a free kick was the difference in the contest as the Bears held off a Diplomats' offense that more than doubled the home team's shot total.
The first half consisted of a lot of play in the midfield with the Diplomats outshooting the Bears, 6-1, in the first 45 minutes of play. However, neither team recorded a shot on goal in the period.
F&M generated the first four shots of the second half, including a shot on net from
Zoe Warne in the 56th minute, but her attempt was saved by the Ursinus goalkeeper to keep the game scoreless.
After Ursinus scored in the 57th, F&M ramped up the offensive pressure with shots on goal from Warne and
Katherine Finnerty. However, both those chances were denied by UC's Mallory Toomey.
Grace Craig and
Kate Boujoukos both had opportunities late to tie the score, but both Diplomats were rejected by Toomey to keep the Bears in front.
F&M tallied 21 total shots and held UC to just six attempts in the game. Warne led the Diplomats with five shots, while Boujoukos notched four attempts in the contest.
Lucy Fleming did all she could to keep F&M within striking distance, making three saves in the match.
Franklin & Marshall concludes the regular season on the road at Bryn Mawr on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
