YORK, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season at York (Pa.) (2-2), 58-52, in Tuesday's evening's non-conference matchup. F&M struggled from the field in the contest, making just 24.6 percent (15-of-61) of its shots, while the Spartans connected on 39.2 percent (20-of-51) of their shots.
F&M trailed 11-6 with under two minutes remaining in the first quarter when
Fiona Reckner knocked down a pair of free throws to get the Diplomats within three. York converted an and-one on the following possession, but
Hailey Cabanas came right back with a three-pointer to keep the deficit at three. The Spartans added a free throw in the closing seconds to end the quarter with a 15-11 advantage.
The teams traded baskets at the start of the second quarter with the Spartans leading 22-18. After
Steph Sexton made a layup, Cabanas drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 22-22 with 2:30 remaining in the half. Despite the surge, York made two three-pointers to close the quarter with a 28-22 lead.
Franklin & Marshall chipped away at the lead with
Gia Sioutis scoring the first four points of the frame to get the Diplomats within two. A jumper from
Kayla McCrea tied the game at 28-28 with 7:21 on the clock. From that point, the Spartans went on an 8-1 run to jump ahead 36-29. York maintained a seven-point lead until Cabanas connected on a jumper to reduce the deficit to five entering the final quarter.
Lauren Rusas went 2-for-2 at the free throw line at the start of the fourth quarter to cut York's lead to 39-36. The Spartans responded by outscoring the Diplomats 12-1 across the next five minutes of the period. F&M trailed 55-44 with 2:27 remaining in the game when
Lizzie Neville made a layup to get the Diplomats back within single digits. Sioutis and Neville made layups on the next two possession to get the visitors within five, but that was as close as they would come with York holding off F&M's comeback efforts.
Neville led the Diplomats with 15 points and 11 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season. Neville also swiped five steals in the contest. Sioutis finished the game with 11 rebounds and two steals.
Franklin & Marshall looks to get back in the win column when it hosts the annual Terry Greene Tip-Off Tournament. The Diplomats begin the weekend with a game against Lancaster Bible on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
