BRYN MAWR, Pa.- The Franklin & Marshall volleyball team (20-4, 8-1 Centennial Conference) earned an away sweep (25-17, 25-13, 25-9) at Bryn Mawr (3-18, 0-9 Centennial Conference) on Wednesday evening.
Jillian Surkis delivered a strong offensive performance, hitting .500 with seven kills and one ace.
Coco Shultz registered eight kills with a .389 hitting percentage, two aces, and five digs.
Melissa Benkowitz hit. 438 with eight kills and eight digs.
Chloe Wiedman led the Diplomats with ten digs. Setting responsibility was evenly shared by the Diplomats' three setters.
Liah Perez had ten assisted with a team-high three aces,
Carly Campbell posted ten assists with two aces, and
Lily Harmon registered nine assists with two aces.
The sides dueled to begin the first set, tying four-straight times up to 4-4 before the Owls earned a 7-4 lead on a four-point run. The Diplomats efficiently canceled out the deficit, going on a seven-point run with kills from five Diplomats and two aces from Campbell to lead, 11-7. Bryn Mawr stopped the run for a point before the Diplomats scored four more points, including two Shultz aces, for a 15-8 lead. The sides traded serves the rest of the way, winning on a Campbell kill at 25-17.
The Diplomats' offense bounced back after hitting .163 with seven errors in set one, hitting a match-best .407 in a convincing 25-12 second set. They earned an early 3-1 lead thanks to three attack errors from Bryn Mawr. Ahead 5-4, they pushed ahead with a three-point run for an 8-4 advantage. They continued to consistently pull away, using small runs that included four-straight points at 10-6, to enter the end of the set with a 20-11 lead. They closed the set with five of the last six points, confirming the second game on an attack error from the Owls.
Bryn Mawr yet again earned an early lead to begin the third set, scoring the first four points on two kills and two Diplomats attack errors. F&M responded with six consecutive points on a run where Benkowitz had two kills and a block assist. The Diplomats maintained this lead up to a 9-6 scoreline. At this point, they scored 11 of the next 12 points, including two aces and a kill from Harmon, to extend the advantage to 20-7. The Diplomats closed out the set with the final three points via a
Claire Kelly kill, and a kill and solo block from
Avery Grantham for a 25-9 scoreline.
The Diplomats conclude the regular season with a tri-match at Swarthmore where they'll face the Garnet and No. 22 Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, November 8.
