LANCASTER, Pa.- The second-seeded No. 13 Franklin & Marshall field hockey team (15-4, 8-2) saw their Centennial Conference Tournament run come to a close with a 1-0 loss to third-seeded No. 12 Dickinson (18-2, 8-2) in the semifinals on Thursday evening.
The Diplomats opened the game with full control of the first five minutes, totaling two shots and three penalty corners. Their best chance of the first quarter came in the seventh minute when
Ava Lofgren's shot from a few yards away ricocheted off the crossbar. Dickinson registered one shot in the first 15 minutes.Â
The Red Devils had full control in the second quarter, generating eight shots and seven penalty corners. They applied heavy pressure in the final seconds, forcing three saves from Dole from two penalty corners in the last five seconds, forcing their second penalty corner after time expired.Â
Dickinson scored the eventual game-winner just two minutes into the second half from a penalty corner. Starting from the right side, they worked several passes across the circle before playing a pass into a player at the near post whose shot hit the post and deflected off the goalkeeper into the cage. The Red Devils controlled the pace in the remaining time in the third quarter, outshooting F&M 5-1.
F&M struggled to generate chances in the first ten minutes of the fourth quarter, but a yellow card for Dickinson with five minutes left gave the Diplomats an extra player to work with in attack. They also withdrew Dole from the cage with two minutes left  F&M forced four total saves in those remaining moments, forcing two stops apiece from two separate penalty corners. On both occasions, the Diplomats forced saves from initial shots and rebounded shots. Across the fourth quarter, the Diplomats outshot Dickinson 7-0 and generated five penalty corners, but they were unable to draw level.
Meghan Dole stopped five shots, while
Keira Boensch and
Caitlin Hoover led the Diplomats in shots, totaling four each.
The Diplomats will now seek one of ten available at-large bids into the NCAA DIII Field Hockey Tournament during Sunday evening's Selection Show.Â
