WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team (13-8, 4-6 CC) fell on the road at McDaniel (13-6, 4-4 CC), 68-61, in Saturday afternoon's Centennial Conference (CC) contest. F&M struggled to contain McDaniel on the boards as the Green Terror outrebounded the Diplomats, 42-27, in the game. McDaniel also tallied 23 second-chance points on 19 offensive rebounds.
Tied at 10-all with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter, the Green Terror began creating separation by scoring the next five points of the game.
Kennedy Wilburn responded by splashing a three pointer with one minute left in the frame, but McDaniel knocked down a jumper in the closing seconds to give the home team a 17-13 lead after 10 minutes.
Trailing 26-17 halfway through the second quarter,
Mackenzie Ward and Wilburn connected on jumpers on consecutive possessions to get the Diplomats within five. However, McDaniel closed the frame on a 13-0 run to take a 39-21 lead into the halftime break.
McDaniel built its lead up to 20 with two minutes remaining in the third when F&M began an 8-1 run to get back within striking distance. Trailing 53-35,
Lizzie Neville knocked down a jumper that was followed by a McDaniel free throw. From that point, Wilburn made a layup and Neville hit a mid-range jumper in the final seconds to reduce the Green Terror's lead to 54-41 entering the closing quarter.
F&M trailed by 17 with three minutes left in regulation when Wilburn made a layup to cut the deficit to 15.
Kayla McCrea followed by drilling three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to get the Diplomats within nine. Despite the late charge, the deficit was too great to overcome as McDaniel hung on to win the game.
Franklin & Marshall as a team shot an impressive 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field in the effort.
For the second time this season, two Diplomats tallied 20 or more points in the same game. Neville recorded a game-high 23 points, while Wilburn registered a career-high 22 points in the contest. Neville also swiped five steals, while Wilburn claimed one steal in the game. McCrea also finished her day in double figures with 10 points.
Franklin & Marshall now heads to Bryn Mawr next Saturday to face the Owls at 1:00 p.m.
