CARLISLE, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team (15-10, 6-8 CC) lost a heartbreaker on the road at Dickinson (13-11, 7-6 CC), 48-47, in the Diplomats' regular-season finale on Wednesday evening. A defensive battle came down to the wire as F&M had an opportunity to tie the game in the final seconds. However, the Diplomats fell just short in their effort to bury the tying basket.
Trailing by four with 57 seconds left in regulation,
Kennedy Wilburn sank a free throw to cut the Dickinson lead to 45-42. On the Red Devils' next offensive possession,
Ally Trebelev played perfect defense to take a charge and give F&M the ball back. F&M took advantage of the great defensive play as
Kayla McCrea found a cutting Wilburn to lay it in and get the Diplomats within one. Dickinson grew its lead to three with a pair of free throws in the closing seconds of regulation, but a shooting foul on a three-point attempt before the buzzer sent Trebelev to the line with a chance to tie the game. However, the senior hit two of the three free throws as Dickinson held on to win.
F&M fought its way back into the game in the third quarter as Dickinson held a 27-19 lead with eight minutes remaining in the frame. Trebelev splashed a three-pointer, followed by a layup from Wilburn to reduce the deficit to three. The Red Devils strung together a few baskets to lead 34-27 at the 3:07 mark of the quarter. Wilburn made a layup, followed by a basket from
Kayla McCrea to get the visitors within three. A layup by Dickinson in the final seconds of the quarter gave the Red Devils a 36-31 lead entering the final quarter.
As a team, Franklin & Marshall shot 27 percent (17-of-63) from the field, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from beyond the arc, and 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from the free throw line in the loss. Dickinson also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Diplomats, 53-37.
F&M did take care of the ball in the contest, while also forcing Dickinson into tough situations on defense. The Diplomats turned the ball over just 11 times, while forcing the Red Devils to turn the ball over 24 times in the game.
Trebelev and Wilburn led F&M with 14 points each in the effort. Wilburn also tallied 11 rebounds to pick up her eighth double-double of the season.
Lizzie Neville swiped five steals, while Wilburn and
Gia Sioutis notched two steals each in the contest.
Franklin & Marshall concludes a season it should be proud of as the Diplomats reached 15 wins for the first time since the 2011-12 season. F&M also earned nine wins at the Mayser Center, which is the most home wins since the 2007-08 campaign.
