LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (4-0) earned an 11-1 win over DeSales (2-1) Friday afternoon in the Diplomats' home opener at Penn Medicine Park. F&M piled on with four runs coming in both the third and fifth inning to claim a run-rule victory over the Bulldogs in seven innings.
F&M got the bats started in the bottom of the third as
Colin Mackenzie led off the frame with a single and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later,
Bobby Falese ripped a single up the middle to score Mackenzie and put F&M ahead, 1-0.
Michael von Zuben,
Tanner Wolpert and
Nick DiGiacomo hit three-consecutive doubles resulting in three more runs to extend the lead to 4-0.
After DeSales plated a runner in the top of the fourth, F&M went right back to work in the bottom of the fifth. Wolpert continued his impressive stretch with a single into right center to score Falese and push the F&M lead back to four. An RBI-single from
Nick Lorenzo grew the lead to 6-1. F&M loaded the bases for
Gideon Schwartz to hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring DiGiacomo and making the score, 7-1. An RBI-single from Mackenzie capped the inning with the Diplomats holding an 8-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, Franklin & Marshall loaded the bases for Schwartz to lace a single into left field that scored two runs on the play to give the home team a 10-1 lead.
F&M secured the win in the bottom of the seventh as
AJ Desautels worked a walk and later came around to score on an RBI-single from Falese.
Five Diplomats recorded multi-hit games with Wolpert and Schwartz notching three RBI each in the win. F&M also swiped four steals as a team with DiGiacomo stealing two bases in the contest.
Dan Galef (2-0) was impressive in the win, striking out seven and allowing just two hits and one earned run in six innings.
Kiernan Keller ended the game in relief, allowing no hits or earned runs during his one inning of work.
Franklin & Marshall returns to Penn Medicine Park on Saturday to host a doubleheader against RIT, starting at 11:00 a.m.
