NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Franklin & Marshall men's lacrosse team wrapped up a 2-0 week in Tennessee with a 13-4 win against Ohio Northern on Monday. Playing a neutral site contest, the Diplomats (5-2) scored the first five goals of the game and led by as many as 11 goals at 13-2 before the final horn sounded.
Mason Montrella led F&M with four goals on the afternoon, while Kai Kelly added three more for this third hat trick of the season. Although the Diplomats' defense limited Ohio Northern to just 11 shots on goal throughout the entire contest, Teddy Scarborough made six saves prior to William Shaw making one more stop in the final minutes.
Dillon Mannix and Matt Marino were two more goal scorers for the Diplomats as each found the back of the cage during the first quarter, while Kelly and Montrella got started on their multi-goal outings. Kelly added two more goals during the second quarter to finish off his hat trick, with Kyle Stevenson, Preston Blue, and Eli Crystal also scoring before the half to give F&M a 9-2 lead after 30 minutes.
Montrella scored the only three goals of the third quarter for either team to help the Diplomats grow their advantage before Jacob Szczepanski's goal allowed F&M's lead to reach its largest margin of the game early in the fourth quarter. With Blue and Mannix both scoring on Monday, the Diplomats now have five different players who have scored at least 10 goals through the first seven contests of the year.
Franklin & Marshall finished the game with a dominating 55-26 advantage in shots. The Diplomats also won the ground ball battle by a 32-24 margin. Declan Connaughton led the team with four ground balls, while Owen Hire and Kelly each collected three more to finish as two of the eight Diplomats with multiple ground balls on the afternoon.
Men's lacrosse will now return to Pennsylvania where a local matchup at Elizabethtown is set for Saturday, March 15. Opening faceoff will be at noon in the team's final non-conference game of the regular season.
