Softball Splits at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md.- The Franklin & Marshall softball team (8-17, 3-5 Centennial) earned a split at McDaniel (12-12-1, 3-5 Centennial) on Sunday, winning the first game, 4-1, before falling in a 4-0 shutout to conclude the series.

Game One

A three-run sixth inning from the Diplomats proved the difference maker in a 4-1 win to open the day. Alexa Klepper was 3-for-4 with two doubles, 1 RBI, and one run scored in the leadoff spot, while Grace Header went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Natalia Garza had one double with two RBI.  

In the circle, Charlotte Dwyer earned the win with five innings of service, one earned run, three hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts. Ainsley McClure closed things down in the final to innings with no earned runs, two hits, one walk, and one strikeout.

Neither team got into scoring position through the first two innings, but F&M struck first in the top of the third. Klepper doubled to leadoff the frame. While a Gabby Mundy sacrifice bunt advanced her to second base. Sophia Noriega then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score one run. Two runners reached with two outs, although a strikeout ended the inning. McDaniel would leave two runners on base in both the third and fourth innings.

F&M broke free with a three-run sixth inning. Header singled on a bunt to start. From there Nora Siorski singled, then Garza added two insurance runs with a double to center field. Claire Sullivan advanced the runner, while a Klepper double made it 4-0.

McDaniel closed the gap with one run in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff double as followed by a one-out single to score one run. McDaniel left two runners on in the bottom of the seventh to give F&M a win in game one. 

Game Two

The Green Terror scored four runs in their final two innings while keeping F&M to five hits to hand F&M a 4-0 loss in game two. 

McClure pitched the first 4.0 innings, allowing one earned run and seven hits with two strikeouts. Mundy was 2-for-4, while Klepper recorded a double.

After the first two runners reached in the top of the first, F&M was unable to bring the runners home. McDaniel also came close to breaking through when the Green Terror loaded the bases on three straight one-out singles, although McClure generated a strikeout and flyout to leave the game at 0-0.

McDaniel scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, while two more runners crossed the plate in the bottom of the sixth. F&M loaded the bases in the seventh but was unable to avoid the shutout.  

The Diplomats are back in Centennial Conference competition on Tuesday, April 15, at 3:00 p.m., as they host No. 13 Gettysburg.
