LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (20-16, 6-8 CC) was defeated by Dickinson (15-16, 6-8 CC) in both games of its Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Caplan Field. The Red Devils took game one, 8-7, before run-ruling the Diplomats, 11-1, in game two.
Game 1: Dickinson 8, Franklin & Marshall 7
F&M overcame an early 4-0 deficit to come all the way back and lead the contest 7-5. However, Dickinson scored three runs in the eighth to outlast the Diplomats in the opening game.
After Dickinson scored four runs in the top of the second, Franklin & Marshall came right back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Three walks loaded the bases for
Nolan McCloskey to single into right field, bringing home two and cutting the Red Devils' lead to 4-2.
F&M continued pressing in the bottom of the fifth as
AJ Desautels ripped a two-out double into left field to keep the inning alive.
Bobby Falese followed with a single into right field to get F&M within a run.
Dickinson added a run in the top of the seventh, but F&M answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Trailing 5-3,
Colin Mackenzie and McCloskey knocked back-to-back singles and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Desautels. Falese then drove a two-RBI double into right field to tie the game at 5-5.
Tanner Wolpert kept the rally going with a single into right field to score Falese and give F&M its first lead of the game, 6-5. After Wolpert made his way around the bases to third,
Andrew Filippelli hit a single up the middle to score the runner and cushion the lead at 7-5.
The Red Devils responded with four hits to score three runs in the top of the eighth to take a one-run lead.
F&M put together one last push in the bottom of the ninth as Wolpert led off the frame with a double into right field.
Vincent Mariniello pinch ran for Wolpert, advancing to third on a flyout to center field. Despite the promising start to the inning, F&M couldn't drive in the tying run as the Diplomats fell in game one.
Four Diplomats ended the contest with multiple hits as Falese led the team with three RBI. F&M registered four extra-base hits with Desautels tallying two doubles in the contest.
Anders Snow (1-1) was tagged with the loss, striking out one and allowing three earned runs in 0.2 innings pitched.
Dan Galef was hit with a no-decision as he struck out seven batters and allowed four earned runs in six innings on the mound.
Game 2: Dickinson 11, Franklin & Marshall 1 (7 Innings)
Free bases plagued the Diplomats in game two as Dickinson scored 11 runs on just seven hits to earn an 11-1 run-rule victory over F&M.
The Red Devils scored nine runs in the first three innings, while holding Franklin & Marshall hitless through the first 4.2 innings of play. The Diplomats generated offense in the bottom of the sixth as Desautels doubled and came home on a single from Falese to make the score 9-1.
In addition to Desautels and Falese, Mackenzie and Mariniello also recorded hits in the loss.
Kiernan Keller (3-3) was the losing pitcher in game two, striking out one and allowing three earned runs in two innings on the mound.
Franklin & Marshall looks to bounce back when it hosts No. 21 Gettysburg at Caplan Field on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
