GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (21-17, 7-9 CC) was defeated, 10-5, by Gettysburg (28-10, 7-9 CC) in Friday afternoon's Centennial Conference (CC) contest. Tied at 5-5, the Bullets scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn a split in the home-and-home series.
With a strikeout in the bottom of the fourth inning,
Dan Galef became the fourth pitcher in program history to reach 200 career strikeouts.
Gettysburg took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but F&M fought back in the top of the third.
Gideon Schwartz led off the inning with a single, while
Vincent Mariniello reached on an error to put runners at the corners.
Colin Mackenzie then singled through the right side of the infield, scoring Schwartz and cutting the deficit to 3-1. F&M loaded the bases right before a double play allowed Mariniello to score and get the Diplomats within a run.
Tanner Wolpert capped the inning by ripping a single into left field to score Mackenzie and tie the game at 3-3.
In the top of the sixth, Wolpert doubled and
AJ Desautels singled to put two runners on with two outs.
Andrew Filippelli drove a single into left field to plate both runners, giving F&M a 5-3 advantage.
The Bullets later tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh before scoring five runs in the eighth to pull away with the win.
Every F&M starter earned a hit with Wolpert leading the team with two hits in the contest. Filippelli recorded two RBI, while Mackenzie and Wolpert drove in one RBI each.
Bijan Anvar (4-3) was tagged with the loss, striking out two and allowing five earned runs in 1.1 innings of relief. Galef was hit with a no-decision as he struck out eight and allowed three earned runs in six innings pitched.
With one final push towards a playoff spot, Franklin & Marshall hosts Muhlenberg on Saturday for a doubleheader at Penn Medicine Park. The Diplomats will also honor its seven seniors for Senior Day. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon.
