No. 14 Diplomats Concede Overtime Penalty Stroke Goal at W&L

LEXINGTON, Va.- The No. 14 Franklin & Marshall field hockey team's (6-1) undefeated start to 2025 came to a close, as hosts Washington & Lee (4-2) erased a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter before securing a 4-3 overtime on a penalty stroke win over the Diplomats.

Meghan Dadio led F&M in goal involvements, recording one goal and one assist. Hannah Fitzgerald and Sophia Sarbanes each recorded one goal, while Caitlin Hoover had one assist. Meghan Dole stopped 10 of the 14 shots she faced. 

The first 15 minutes saw a combined 15 shots. Despite being outshot 11-4, F&M left the first quarter in a 1-1 tie. The Generals opened the scoring in the eighth minute, while the Diplomats answered back with Dadio assisting a Sarbanes goal from a penalty corner. 

The Diplomats had full momentum in the second quarter, outshooting the hosts 8-2 while taking a 2-1 advantage. Following a run of three shots either blocked or saved in rapid succession, Fitzgerald broke through in the 22nd minute to give F&M the lead. 

F&M added to their lead inside of the first minute in the third quarter, as Dadio scored via a Hoover assist. F&M outshot the Generals 3-2 across the third quarter.

With less than seven minutes left in regulation, the Generals cut into the Diplomats lead with a goal for a 3-2 scoreline. 60 seconds later, they the game at three-each. The Diplomats generated two shots in the remaining time in regulation, but neither tested the goalkeeper.

Washington and Lee opened overtime with two blocked shots and one saved shot in the first two minutes, while momentum soon swung back to F&M who produced four penalty corners and four sides in a two minute span. While neither side executed on those chances, the W&L found a breakthrough on a penalty stroke in the eighth minute of overtime. 

Across the entire game, the sides were nearly equal in creating chances. Washington and Lee had 23 shots and 14 shots on goal, while F&M had 22 shots with 13 on target. The Generals also drew one more penalty corner than F&M, with 10 penalty corners against nine for the Diplomats. 

The No. 14 Diplomats will look to start a new winning streak in the Centennial Conference opener at home against Haverford on Saturday, September 27.
