LANCASTER, Pa.- The Franklin & Marshall field hockey team (3-0) earned their third-straight win to start the year, defeating Montclair State (1-2), 3-1, on Saturday afternoon.
Hannah Fitzgerald scored one goal, assisted by Megan Dadio, while both Bella Konchar and Caroline Roschen registered penalty stroke goals. Meghan Dole made three stops on four attempts after the Diplomats defense conceded just nine total shots, all occurring in the second half.
Taking the first penalty corner of the game in the fifth minute, the Diplomats drew a penalty stroke. For the fourth time in three games, Bella Konchar executed from the spot with a high-paced shot high and to the goalkeeper's right.Â
After registering two shots in the opening 13 minutes of the second quarter, the Diplomats doubled their advantage in the 29th minute with the only open-play goal of the contest. Dadio worked past two defenders on the left side of the arc and fired a low cross across the face of goal. Fitzgerald gave the goalkeeper no chance, tipping the ball into the top-right corner.
Franklin & Marshall registered seven shots in the first half while not allowing a single shot from the Red Hawks.
F&M returned from the halftime break with seven shots and six penalty corners in the first ten minutes, but they were unable to add to the 2-0 lead. After drawing their first penalty corner of the game with two minutes remaining the third corner, Montclair State forced the first save of the game from Dole.
The Diplomats again looked for insurance early in the fourth quarter, but they were unable to convert on seven shots and five penalty corners in the first six minutes. Montclair State found a route back into the game when they drew a penalty stroke in the 54th minute, putting the ball high and to the right of Dole to cut the lead to one.Â
Within 90 seconds, F&M drew a penalty stroke, and Roschen slotted a ball low and left of the keeper to move F&M's lead back to two. The Red Hawks looked to rally back in the final six minutes, but they could not cut into the lead despite six shots and seven penalty corners.
Across the hour, the Diplomats outshot their opponents 24-9, and registered 16 shots on goal against four from the Red Hawks.Â
Franklin & Marshall compete again when they make the short trip to Elizabethtown on Wednesday, September 10, at 7:00 p.m.
