LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team (9-6, 2-3 CC) fell to Gettysburg (10-5, 3-1 CC), 69-58, in Wednesday evening's Centennial Conference (CC) game inside the Mayser Center. The Bullets jumped in front early and didn't let their foot off the gas as the visitors led wire-to-wire to secure the season sweep of the Diplomats.
F&M started the game ice cold from the field as Gettysburg slowly built an early advantage. The Diplomats scored their first bucket of the game with 2:04 remaining in the first quarter as
Lizzie Neville made a layup to reduce the Bullets' lead to 12-2. Two free throws from
Mackenzie Ward in the closing seconds cut the deficit to eight through one quarter of play.
Gettysburg held a 14-6 lead two minutes into the second quarter when Neville and
Gia Sioutis made back-to-back jumpers to get F&M within four. Ward and Neville made three free throws to get the Diplomats within one with 6:09 remaining in the quarter. Gettysburg slowly began to grow its lead when
Gianna Modica splashed a three-pointer to cut the visitors' advantage to 23-20. From that point, the Bullets closed the half on a 10-2 run to take a 33-22 lead into the halftime intermission.
Lauren Rusas connected on a jumper to get F&M within nine to start the second half. However, Gettysburg continued to find success on offense as it grew its lead to as large as 19 in the period. A layup from Neville in the final seconds cut the Bullets' advantage to 57-40 entering the final quarter.
Neville began the fourth frame by draining a three-pointer to get F&M within 14. After a pair of Gettysburg free throws, Ward splashed a triple to reduce the deficit to 59-46. Following a pair of free throws from Neville, the senior went coast-to-coast on a steal to get the Diplomats within nine. However, that was as close F&M would come to tying the game as Gettysburg held off the late surge to complete the win.
Despite a cold start to the game, F&M finished the contest shooting 30.2 percent (19-of-63) from the field and 88.9 percent (16-of-18) from the free throw line. Gettysburg finished the game shooting 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the field, while also outrebounding F&M, 44-38.
Neville led the contest with 25 points, four assists, and four steals. The senior guard also finished the game shooting 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Ward followed with 10 points, seven rebounds, and two three-pointers in the effort.
Franklin & Marshall returns to action on Saturday, hosting No. 5 Johns Hopkins at 1:00 p.m.
