(RV) Men's Basketball Overcomes Early Deficit with OT Victory at Dickinson

LANCASTER, Pa.- The (RV) Franklin & Marshall men's basketball team (15-2, 4-1 Centennial Conference) erased a 16-point deficit early in the second half against Dickinson (4-13, 1-4 Centennial Conference), winning Saturday's game in overtime, 63-60.

Franklin Jones set three-career highs in a starring performance, posting 15 points, nine rebounds, and five steals. Bryson Amos-Whitfield accounted for all bench points, totaling 13 including two of F&M's three total triples on a day where F&M struggled to a 11.5% three-point field goal percentage (3-of-26). He also posted seven rebounds and two steals. Steve Donahue was a perfect 8-of-8 at the charity stripe, totaling 12 points, while Vakaris Grauslys had 13 points, six assists, and three steals.

F&M reached overtime after overcoming a 38-22 deficit in the early stages of the second half, going on a 31-15 run in the last 18:45 to force extra basketball. After Jones won the OT tip-off, both sides were unsuccessful on their first possession. F&M broke the deadlock following a Jones steal and Donahue drawing a foul in the paint, sinking both free throws. A Red Devils triple put them back ahead by a point through the first minute of the period. Jones put F&M back ahead with a layup of his own, but the Red Devils responded at the other end with two more points, although they missed an and-one opportunity to leave their lead at one.

Jones then drew a foul on his successful shot, but a missed and-one from him put F&M ahead by a point at 59-58. A Grauslys blocked shot on a driving layup proved pivotal going forward, as his layup one possession later gave the Diplomats a three-point lead. Jones and Grauslys each added a point via free throws over the next minute of play to give the Diplomats a five-point lead with 90 seconds left. Dickinson got back within three with a layup on their next possession. Following an unsuccessful F&M possession, Dickinson missed the mark on a layup with eight seconds left, but retained possession on a jump ball. They'd then retain control following a missed three with four seconds to go. Their three attempt at the buzzer missed the mark, however, securing a comeback win for the Diplomats.

An early 13-point run for Dickinson proved pivotal to the Red Devils' 32-22 lead at the end of the first half. The sides traded buckets through the first minute followed by a seven-point run from Diplomats including a layup and free throw from Jones. With F&M's lead at 9-3 through the opening 3:30, Dickinson called a timeout. They returned from the break with 13 unanswered points, keeping F&M off the scoreboard for over six minutes, putting the deficit at 16-9 through the first ten minutes.

Amos-Whitfield broke that scoreless run with a free throw followed by a steal and driving layup from Jones to cut the hosts' lead to 16-12. Dickinson responded again with a six-point run that pushed their advantage back to double digits with 6:30 left in the half. The sides traded buckets in the remaining time, as F&M remained behind by a 32-22 scoreline at the intermission. Notably, F&M shot 7.1% (1-of-14) on threes, with the lone triple coming with two minutes remaining via Kevin Nowoswiat to break a run of 13 unsuccessful attempts. Dickinson won the rebounding battle in the first half, 25-17. Dickinson made use of their rebounds, scoring nine second-chance points while F&M had just one.

Dickinson returned from the halftime break with three-consecutive layups inside of 1:15 for a game-best advantage of 38-22. Both offenses remained cool over the next seven minutes, accounting for four points apiece. Amos-Whitfield began to get the Diplomats back into contention with a three that opened a seven-point run, putting F&M behind 42-33. A Red Devils free throw halted the run momentarily, as the Diplomats followed this with six unanswered points, including five from Amos-Whitifield.

Behind by just four points at this stage, Donahue drew fouls on back-to-back possessions, tying the contest 45-45 by sinking all four three throws. The Diplomats claimed the lead with back-to-back layups over the next their next two chances, but Dickinson tied things back up with a pair of layups. The teams continued to trade points entering the final minutes, as F&M earned possession with 26 seconds to go and the game tied at 53-53. Following a blocked shot with tenths of a second remaining, Jones' layup from the inbound pass missed the mark to send the game to overtime.

Across all 45 minutes, F&M drew 22 turnovers from Dickinson while conceding 14 of their own. The Diplomats profited from these chances, totaling 24 points from turnovers. Dickinson did win the rebounding duel, 45-40. Both offenses struggled beyond the arc, as F&M was held to 11.5% (3-of-26) and Dickinson shot just 13.0% (3-of-23). Both sides were also below 60.0% on free throws. Outside of Donahue's 8-of-8, the Diplomats went 30.0% (6-of-20) from the charity stripe.

F&M returns to the Mayser Center to host Washington College on Wednesday, January 28, at 7:00 p.m.
