Women's Soccer Concedes Second-Half Goals to Gettysburg in 2-0 Loss

LANCASTER, Pa.- The Franklin & Marshall women's soccer team (5-3-3, 2-2-2 Centennial Conference) were undone by a pair of second-half goals from visiting Gettysburg (7-4-2, 3-2-1 Centennial Conference) on Wednesday evening.

Colleen Ferrarese led the Diplomats with five shots, including two shots on goal. All three shots from Ashley Inacio were on target, while Emerson McDonald had four shots and two shots on goal. Lucy Fleming made one stop in goal.

The Diplomats had exclusive control of chance creation in the first half, putting four of seven total shots on target while allowing no shots. The best opportunity came from a set-piece into the box in the 26th minute. The contested ball eventually fell to Inacio in space, and her first-time hit from six yards away forced a stop. McDonald won the race to the rebounded ball, but her close-range attempt missed the bottom-left corner. Inacio had one more strong chance in the 29th minute, as a recycled corner made its way to her unmarked on the keeper's far side. Her low effort forced a diving stop to save it from the inside of the far post.

F&M was swift to look for an opening goal after the halftime break. Grace Craig found Finnerty unmarked near the keeper's far post, but her low attempt hit the side netting. Minutes later, a Kyra Magerko ball into the box made its way to Ellison Errington in space near the penalty spot, but she shot sailed just high. Inacio had another shot saved at the near post from 12 yards out in the 60th minute.

The Bullets began to press for an opener in the next phase of the game as they saw a header from a corner miss the mark in the 62nd minute. They then found the back of the net eight minutes later from the penalty spot. Gettysburg created the chance by playing a low cross across the face of goal. Fleming came out to challenge for the ball, but missed contact with the ball in her challenge to give the Bullets a penalty kick. She guessed to her right side, but the shot was sent straight down the middle to open the scoring.

Gettysburg doubled their advantage in the 80th minute with an outside-the-box shot into the top-right corner. The Bullets began the sequence by winning their goal kick at midfield and swiftly progressing forward. A ball into the box was blocked, but Gettysburg won the ball and passed right to a player in space who found the top-right corner from 20 yards out.

F&M pushed to get on the scoreline in the remaining time with shots from Finnerty, Magerko, and Gianna Limongello, but the Diplomats were kept off the scoreboard.

The hosts held an 11-7 shot advantage in the second half.

The Diplomats will look to bounce back at #20 Johns Hopkins on Saturday, October 17, at 4 p.m.
