WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (6-2) erased a four-run deficit by scoring six runs on six hits in the ninth to defeat McDaniel (6-5), 7-5, in Tuesday afternoon's non-conference matchup.
F&M struck first in the top of the third as
Nick Lorenzo led off the frame with a single in the infield. After Lorenzo stole second,
Landon Hallett laced a single through the middle of the infield to put the Diplomats ahead, 1-0. However, McDaniel answered quickly with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the score at 1-1.
After a scoreless four-inning stretch, the Green Terror racked up five hits to score four runs as the home team claimed a 5-1 advantage.
Down to their final three outs, the Diplomats began to rally as
Nick DiGiacomo singled and
Zac Fuscaldo doubled to start the top of the ninth. An error in the McDaniel infield allowed DiGiacomo to score as the Diplomats cut the deficit to three. The next batter,
Gideon Schwartz ripped a double into left center field to score Fuscaldo and advance
Owen Woodward to third. A sacrifice fly from Hallett plated Woodward to get F&M within a run of tying the game. With two outs,
Enrico Tufano lined a pinch-hit two-run double into left center field to give F&M a 6-5 lead. The Diplomats weren't done yet as
Matt Hollender singled down the left field line to score Tufano and cushion the lead at 7-5.
Chris Keating (1-0) earned his first-career win as he shut down any answer from McDaniel, striking out one and allowing just one hit in 1.2 innings of relief.
DiGiacomo, Lorenzo, and
Nolan McCloskey tallied two hits each in the win. Hallett and Tufano recorded two RBI each in the victory. Additionally, Fuscaldo, Schwartz, and Tufano all notched doubles in the contest.
Franklin & Marshall returns to Penn Medicine Park on Wednesday to host Susquehanna at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday's game will be the final game F&M's plays before spring break as Thursday's contest against Elizabethtown has been postponed due to inclement weather in the forecast.
