LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (11-5) turned away Cairn (1-15), 13-0, in seven innings during Tuesday afternoon's non-conference contest. The win was F&M's second shutout of the season and the sixth run-rule victory for the Diplomats this year.
Franklin & Marshall started fast in the top of the first with
Vincent Mariniello reaching base on an error and immediately stealing second.
Michael von Zuben brought Mariniello home on an RBI-single to right center to give the Diplomats a 1-0 lead.
After two quiet innings, F&M broke open the game with eight runs crossing the plate in the top of the fourth. The Diplomats put two runners in scoring position with two outs as
Landon Hallett singled to drive in both runners. Mariniello followed with a triple into left center to extend the visitors' lead to 4-0. Von Zuben roped a double down the left field line to score Mariniello from third for F&M's fifth run of the game. After
Tanner Wolpert was hit by a pitch,
Matt Hollender kept the rally going with a single into left field to plate von Zuben from second. The next batter,
Nick DiGiacomo lifted his second home run of the season over the fence to cushion the F&M lead at 9-0.
Franklin & Marshall continued to find success at the plate in the top of the sixth as Hollender reached base on an error and DiGiacomo singled up the middle of the infield to start the frame.
Owen Woodward followed with a double down the left field line to score Hollender and move DiGiacomo to third.
Enrico Tufano slashed a single to center field to plate both DiGiacomo and Woodward to grow the Diplomats lead to 12-0.
F&M capped the scoring in the top of the seventh as
Ethan Conklin came home on a double into left field from
Tommy Truzzolino for the Diplomats' 13th run of the contest.
Woodward led F&M with three hits, while DiGiacomo and von Zuben recorded two hits each. DiGiacomo also drove in a game-leading three RBI, while Hallett, Tufano, and von Zuben all drove in two RBI each. As a team, Franklin & Marshall recorded seven extra-base hits in the win.
Kiernan Keller (2-1) earned the win on the mound, striking out five without allowing a base runner in 3.0 innings of relief.
Colin Mackenzie had a strong start, recording two strikeouts and allowing just two hits in 3.0 innings of work.
Sebastian Holl closed the game as he tossed two strikeouts and allowed one hit in the final inning.
Franklin & Marshall welcomes Elizabethtown to Caplan Field on Thursday, starting at 3:30 p.m.
