Baseball Denied by McDaniel

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (17-12, 4-6 CC) dropped both games of its Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader against McDaniel (22-10, 5-5 CC) Saturday afternoon at Caplan Field. The Green Terror earned an 11-6 win in game one, before completing the sweep with a 6-1 victory in game two.

Game 1: McDaniel 11, Franklin & Marshall 6
A seven-run sixth inning propelled McDaniel in front of the Diplomats on the scoreboard. F&M rallied for five runs in the seventh, but that's all they would score as the Green Terror held onto the victory in game one.

McDaniel got the scoring started in the top of the first as the Green Terror took an early 1-0 lead. F&M responded in the bottom of the second as Zac Fuscaldo walked and immediately stole second. A groundout moved the first-year to third to set up an RBI-sacrifice fly from Vincent Mariniello to even the score at 1-1.

The Green Terror regained the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs on four hits to take a 3-1 advantage. McDaniel continued to find success at the plate with seven runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh to take an 11-1 lead, but F&M began to battle back in the bottom-half of the seventh.

Nick Lorenzo led off the frame with a single into left field. After Michael von Zuben reached on an error on the infield, Tanner Wolpert singled to load the bases. An RBI-sacrifice fly from Matt Hollender scored Lorenzo for the Diplomats' second run of the contest. Two batters later, Fuscaldo singled to score von Zuben to trim the deficit to 11-3. A single from Gideon Schwartz, followed by a single from Mariniello cut the McDaniel lead to 11-5 with two outs in the inning. Owen Woodward continued the rally by ripping a double down the third base line to plate Schwartz to cut the deficit to 11-6.

Despite the scoring outburst in the seventh, the Diplomats were kept off the scoreboard for the rest of the contest.

Fuscaldo and Schwartz both recorded two hits and one RBI in the game with Fuscaldo leading the Diplomats with two runs scored.

Kiernan Keller (2-3) was tagged with the loss, striking out three and allowing two earned runs in 5.0 innings pitched.

Game 2: McDaniel 6, Franklin & Marshall 1
McDaniel took an early lead and didn't look back, limiting the Diplomats to just four hits and one run in game two.

The Green Terror jumped ahead with three runs in the first and one run in the third to take a 4-0 lead over the Diplomats early in the game. F&M threatened in the bottom of the sixth as Lorenzo and von Zuben ripped back-to-back singles. A walk to Hollender loaded the bases with two outs in the frame. Despite the promising inning, McDaniel got the third out on a strikeout to escape the jam.

The Green Terror capitalized off the momentum by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 6-0.

In the bottom of the eighth, Wolpert worked a one-out walk to start the inning. The next batter, Hollender laced a double into right center field to plate Wolpert for the Diplomats' lone run of the game.

Hollender and Woodward both recorded a double in game two. Von Zuben led F&M on the basepaths, swiping two steals in the effort.

Colin Mackenzie (1-3) was hit with the loss, striking out a career-high eight batters and allowing three earned runs in 6.2 innings of work.

Franklin & Marshall looks to bounce back when it travels to play Washington College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
